Compton Chine & Shippards Chine

Description

Compton Chine is a very narrow chine, which starts between the Military Road and the cliff.

Shippards Chine is used to access Compton Beach, there is little wildlife and it is no longer a functioning chine as the water has been diverted into a culvert. Here you can see that the cliffs are capped by gravel deposits, these once formed the beds of ancient rivers.

Parking

Parking for Compton Chine is available at Compton Farm or there is a small chalk National Trust car park slightly further west. Parking for Shippards Chine is at Compton Beach car park where there is also cycle parking.

Footpaths

The coastal path passes over the chines.

Beach Access

There are wooden steps and a public path to the beach just to the east of Compton Chine, but this area is subject to ongoing land slips. Easier access can be obtained at Shippards Chine where there are wooden steps
