An opportunity arose to undertake work that will improve water quality in the Medina estuary by addressing the impact of blackwater from houseboats / live-aboards in Newport Harbour.
A small area of IW Council owned land used to have facilities including a holding tank, water supply and electricity. By inspecting, repairing and reinstating the tank and pipework we have provided a facility at Newport Harbour. In parallel the IW Council developed new terms and conditions for harbour users to ensure that any live-aboards use the new area for waste disposal.
The need for this work was identified through the Isle of Wight Estuaries Project working with IWC and the local EA officers. Ongoing maintenance, future inspection and tank emptying is part of the Harbour’s responsibilities paid for through the harbour dues.
The project was made possible by funding from DEFRA secured through the Island Rivers Partnership and was completed in Spring 2016. A full report can be read CPAF Medina Houseboat Facility report
